Child Safe Policy

The Salesians of Don Bosco have developed a Child Safe Policy. This policy is an overarching document that provides key elements of our approach to protecting children.

Statement of commitment to child safety

The Salesians are committed to providing a child safe and child friendly environment, where children and young people are safe and feel safe and are able to actively participate in decisions that affect their lives.

Our child safe policy objectives

This policy provides the framework for the development of work systems, practices, policies and procedures that promote child protection within the organisation; the creation of a positive and robust child protection culture; the promotion and open discussion of child protection issues; and compliance with all laws, regulations and standards relevant to child protection in Victoria, NSW, SA and Tasmania.

Code of conduct — keeping children safe

Don Bosco Youth Centre, Brunswick (updated May 2020)

  • All staff, adult volunteers, youth leaders and tertiary students on placement are required to have an up-to-date Working With Children Card.
  • All new staff, adult volunteers, birthday party supervisors, youth leaders and tertiary students on placement are required to go through a face to face orientation process, where personal boundaries and other child safety policies are explained.
  • Staff and adult helpers are not allowed to have any social contact after hours with any children or teenagers (under 18) who attend the Youth Centre, including phone or social media contact.
  • At the end of a session, adult helpers collect and put away equipment so children can leave before adults leave. Adult helpers are not allowed to walk home with children or have any contact with them after hours.
  • Adults cannot attend open sessions unless they have children with them. Parents, grandparents and carers are always welcomed.
  • During open sessions, children 10 years of age and under must always be attended by a parent or adult carer. The Youth Centre is not a child care centre.
